1899 |
Austin Country Club was founded November 14, 1899 by Lewis Hancock, a man of more than ordinary vision. In those days country clubs and golf were practically unknown and we believe it correct to state that the Austin Golf Club (later to be renamed the Austin Country Club) was the first of its kind organized in Texas.

Golf |
This 180-acre golf course is the third home for Austin Country Club since its founding in 1899. Designed by Pete Dye, whom Golfweek Magazine named one of the top architects in the world, the course has been characterized as a "complex and guileful challenge".

Home of Harvey Penick |
Harvey Penick's association with the Austin Country Club spanned 82 years. Harvey started as a caddie at the Club's original Hancock location when he was eight. Later, working weekends, summers and after school he became shop assistant; then, assistant professional. He was offered the Head professional's job while still in school but had to decline when his family insisted he finish high school. In as wise a decision as ever made by any golf club, the job was held open for Harvey. |

1902 |

1934 |
On the early morning of Sunday, March 19, 1934 an Austin landmark went up in flames. The Club was insured for $12,000 and after the fire the club was left without funds and times were very hard. A new clubhouse was needed and a way was found to afford it. The University of Texas was tearing down old Main building and the used materials were available. Today the beautiful new clubhouse still stands, built entirely of brick and stone from Old Main.
